gRPC
This folder has no README. Everything inside it is listed below.
Notes
- RPC and gRPC 4 What is RPC, what does gRPC add to it, and when should you not use it?
- Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) 6 Google's binary serialization format. Schema-required, language-neutral, ~3–5× smaller than equivalent JSON, and ~10× faster to parse.
- gRPC Service Types — Unary and Streaming 7 gRPC defines four RPC patterns. Unary is the obvious one (call function, get result).
- gRPC's HTTP/2 Basis 6 gRPC mandates HTTP/2. The features gRPC depends on — multiplexing, server push, header compression — only exist in HTTP/2.
- Python gRPC 6 The Python side. grpcio is the C-backed implementation; grpcio-tools generates code from .proto files.
- gRPC Interceptors, Metadata, and Auth 6 Interceptors are gRPC's middleware. Metadata is the headers-equivalent — key-value pairs that ride along with every RPC.
- gRPC Error Handling 6 gRPC has its own status codes (not HTTP status codes). 16 well-known codes, returned as trailers after the response.
- gRPC Load Balancing and gRPC-Web 6 Two operational topics: how to load balance gRPC traffic (HTTP/2 changes the rules), and how to use gRPC from browsers (which don't speak it natively).
