  • “Why utility classes rather than semantic CSS?” - styles live at the point of use, so there is no naming problem, no dead CSS, and no fear of breaking something remote by editing a shared class. The trade is verbose markup and a real learning curve.
  • “How does it stay small?” - it scans your source, generates only the classes actually used, and ships nothing else. Class names must therefore appear as complete literals - text-${color}-500 produces nothing, which is the single most common Tailwind bug.
  • “What changed in v4?” - configuration moved into CSS with @theme and @import \"tailwindcss\" instead of a JS config file, the engine was rewritten for a large build-speed gain, content detection became automatic, and container queries and cascade layers are built in.
  • “How do you avoid class-name soup?” - extract a component, not a CSS class. @apply exists but pulls you back into the naming problem Tailwind was meant to remove; the framework’s own guidance is to reach for it rarely.
